Martin Sommerville

Founder and Facilitator

So, I'm Zephyr's dad. My partner Carly, and I, dreamed up the idea for this place on the first sunny spring day after our first boy was stillborn: A non-clinical, creative and nurturing place for bereaved people. It seemed like a slightly crazy, but necessary thing to imagine something we needed too. Though, we had no real notion of how we'd do it.

It's incredible and beautiful, to see how this little idea has taken root, has changed and is growing, helped by many hands. Now I'm humbled, and happy to be only a part of Zephyr's story.

Over the past 25 years I've worked as a video game maker, community and participatory artist and educator, woodworker and dad. Helping people of all ages, abilities, and life experiences build, fix and discover things. I helped build the place where Zephyr's is now - By Our Hands We Make Our Way - a kind of accidental community workshop, where anyone is welcome to join in and make something, whether that's a table and chair, music, drawings, or laughter, friends, tears and joy.

Mostly that's where you'll find me, working for the charity, alongside bereaved dads, whittling away at things, and doing a lot of sweeping up.
